An electric washer needs a suitable power outlet and hose connection; a gas model needs fuel, outdoor operation and the maintenance its engine maker specifies. Compare the actual rated PSI and GPM, hose, accessories and warranty rather than assuming power source sets cleaning ability. Our PSI, GPM and nozzle guide explains the performance figures.
Choose the power source around where you will wash and the machine’s actual performance ratings. Electric models trade engine maintenance for dependence on an appropriate power connection; gas models add fuel and engine care.
Side by side
| Electric | Gas | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Requires a compatible outlet, extension guidance and water supply | Requires fuel, outdoor use and water supply |
| Mobility | Power cord can limit reach | No power cord, but engine and fuel add carrying weight |
| Sound | Usually lower sound at the operator than a comparable gas engine; compare product ratings | Engine noise varies by model and load |
| Care | Pump, hose, fittings and freeze protection per manual | Engine maintenance plus pump, hose and freeze protection |
| Best fit | Nearby outlet and frequent smaller jobs | Sites where cord access is a constraint and engine care is acceptable |
Compare performance and safe use
Check the rated working pressure and flow, not only a peak or “maximum” figure. The Cleaning Equipment Trade Association’s CPC-100 standard provides a uniform performance test method. Match nozzle and distance to the surface, start in a hidden area and stop if the finish lifts or etches.
Follow the maker’s instructions for electrical protection or engine operation, winter storage and service. For PSI, GPM, nozzle angle and accessories, see the pressure-washer specs guide.

Common questions
Is an electric pressure washer enough for a driveway?
It depends on the machine's rated flow and pressure, the soil, the surface and the time available. Compare rated working figures and use a surface cleaner only if the washer maker supports it.
Can I run a gas pressure washer indoors?
No. Gas engines produce exhaust and must be operated outdoors in accordance with the engine and washer manuals.
Which pressure washer needs more maintenance?
A gas model has engine-specific fuel, oil and storage requirements. Electric units still need pump, hose and winter-storage care; follow each manual.
